To The River——

Summary

This poem reflects on the metaphorical beauty and symbolism of a river, drawing parallels between the river's clear, flowing waters and a sense of unhidden beauty and art. The river serves as an emblem of purity and grace, much like the enchanting persona of a beautiful woman, referred to as Alberto's daughter. The poet presents a deep, reflective moment wherein the woman's gaze into the river resembles the way she captivates the speaker's heart. Thus, the river becomes a mirror of both nature's and the woman's inherent elegance, evoking feelings of admiration and reverence in the observer, whose heart trembles at her presence, much like the shimmering reflections in the water.

Fair river! in thy bright, clear flow
Of crystal, wandering water,
Thou art an emblem of the glow
Of beauty—the unhidden heart—
The playful maziness of art
In old Alberto’s daughter;

But when within thy wave she looks—
Which glistens then, and trembles—
Why, then, the prettiest of brooks
Her worshipper resembles;
For in my heart, as in thy stream,
Her image deeply lies—
His heart which trembles at the beam
Of her soul-searching eyes.
