Senzo and the Sun

Summary

In this story, we follow a young boy named Senzo as he experiences the various stages of a day, mirroring the sun's journey across the sky. The tale begins with the morning, as the sunlight wakes Senzo, and continues through his day at school, interactions with family, and playful explorations, each moment accompanied by lively sounds like crowing, honking, and laughter. The narrative captures Senzo's mimicry of these everyday noises, encouraging young readers to join in. As the day winds down, Senzo participates in evening routines, including washing dishes and being lulled to sleep by his mother's soothing hushes. The cycle concludes with the sun setting, wrapping the world in darkness, ready to dream, just like Senzo. This rhythmic tale is designed to engage young children with its repetitive structure, while visually and audibly depicting the familiar and comforting elements of a child's day-to-day world.

The morning sun creeps over the horizon and peeps through the leaves, waking Senzo.

Gogo’s rooster shakes his wings, stretches his neck and crows.

Koek-a-loek-a-loo!

Senzo can crow too.

Koek-a-loek-a-loo!

Can you?

The sun is bright and warm.
Senzo is ready for school.
He takes Gogo’s hand.

The road is busy.
Taxis zip past and toot their horns.

Beep-beep! Beep-beep!

Senzo can toot too.

Beep-beep! Beep-beep!

Can you?

The sun is high in the sky.
School is over and Senzo’s friends play on the grass.

They stretch out their arms and run down the hill.

Weeeeeee! Weeeee!

Senzo can run too.

Weeeeeee! Weeeee!

Can you?

The sun is low on the horizon, the sky is full of colour.
The long day is nearly over and supper is finished.

Gogo and Mama wash the dishes.

Splish-splash! Splish-splash!

Senzo can wash dishes too.

Splish-splash! Splish-splash!

Can you?

The sun is dipping under the horizon, casting long shadows.
Senzo is washed and full and tired.
“It’s time to sleep,” says Mama.

She holds Senzo close and rocks.
She hushes him.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, shhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Senzo can hush too.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, shhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Can you?

The sun has done her work for the day, and she’s going to sleep.

She pulls a blanket of darkness over herself to keep warm.

The sun dreams.

Senzo can dream too.

Can you?
