The Wolves and the Sheep

Summary

This story presents a fable where Wolves entice the Sheep to dismiss their guarding Dogs, promising peace if the perceived threat is removed. The Wolves argue that the Dogs are the real cause of fear and conflict. Gullible and easily persuaded, the Sheep agree to send away their protectors, believing in the prospect of harmony. However, this decision leaves the Sheep vulnerable, allowing the Wolves to freely attack and decimate the flock. The tale illustrates themes of deception, the importance of protection, and the dangers of naivety in the face of manipulation. It serves as a cautionary lesson on the value of critical thinking and the consequences of blindly trusting those who may not have one's best interests at heart.

“Why should there always be this fear and slaughter between us?” said the Wolves to the Sheep. “Those evil-disposed Dogs have much to answer for. They always bark whenever we approach you and attack us before we have done any harm. If you would only dismiss them from your heels, there might soon be treaties of peace and reconciliation between us.” The Sheep, poor silly creatures, were easily beguiled and dismissed the Dogs, whereupon the Wolves destroyed the unguarded flock at their own pleasure.
