The Mole And His Mother

Summary

The story focuses on a young mole who, despite being naturally blind, confidently claims to his mother that he can see. To address his mistaken belief, the mother mole sets a simple test by placing a piece of frankincense before him, asking him to identify it. The young mole, unable to correctly identify the substance and mistaking it for a pebble, inadvertently reveals his lack of not only sight but also smell. Through this brief interaction, the mother cleverly teaches her son a lesson about overconfidence and the importance of recognizing one's limitations. The story serves as a gentle reminder to both children and adults of the value of humility and self-awareness.

A little Mole once said to his Mother:

“Why, Mother, you said I was blind! But I am sure I can see!”

Mother Mole saw she would have to get such conceit out of his head. So she put a bit of frankincense before him and asked him to tell what it was.

The little Mole peered at it.

“Why, that’s a pebble!”

“Well, my son, that proves you’ve lost your sense of smell as well as being blind.”
